BenigNews – Instructions for authors

Aims and Scope

BenigNews is the official information letter of the German Working Group “Radiotherapy for Benign Diseases” and all cooperating international groups. BenigNews intends to improve the information and communication about all fields of radiotherapy for non-malignant or benign diseases including basic research in biology, physics and technical applications, and clinical research.

Official Language

The official language of the newsletter is English. Help will be provided for the translation of articles written in other languages. Please contact the publishing office (see below for address).

New Scientific Content and Copyright

Articles should report on original research or reviews of topics defined above in “Aims and Scope”. The content of the paper should not have been previously published in the same or a similar form or submitted to another journal at the same time. The submission of a paper implies the right to publish that paper, therefore a “transfer of copyright” agreement must be signed by the corresponding author, stating that he or she is acting on behalf of all authors.

Papers and correspondence should be submitted to:

Dr. Oliver Micke
Managing Editor and Publishing Office
Grüner Weg 24c
48341 Altenberge
Phone: +49 2505 947458 or +49 251 8347839
Fax: +49 2505 947463

Ethical Considerations

Work on human beings submitted to the letter should comply with the principles laid down in the Declaration of Helsinki: Recommendations guiding physicians in biomedical research in the form last amended in Hong Kong, September 1989. This is generally assumed to be the case for treatments conforming with common practice. Otherwise, an approval by the corresponding ethic committee has to be presented to the publishing office prior to publication.

Types of Articles

    1.Original papers (full length)
The article should deal with original scientific work in the field of radiation therapy of benign diseases or related areas. Full papers should be divided into the sections Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion. A length of 3 printed pages, including 3 tables or figures, should not be exceeded.

    2.Short communications and technical notes
These papers should include a brief summary of a particular topic and usually not exceed 2 printed pages and 2 tables or figures.

    3.Reviews and overviews
The submission of reviews and overviews is strongly encouraged, as BenigNews is primarily an information letter. For other information see under 2.

    4.Editorials and comments
Will usually be done on an invited basis. For other information see under 2.

    5.Letters to the editor
On topics of current interest or on previously or simultaneously published material. A limit of 300 words should be obeyed. 1 table or figure can be included.

    6.Announcements, advertisements etc.
Please contact the publishing office directly on conditions.

Manuscript submission and text preparation

1.Manuscripts should be submitted in English (translation is available on request – please contact the publishing office).

2.The original and 1 copy of all items including figures and tables is sufficient.

3.Please use A4 paper and print on only one side with double spacing and at least 2.5 cm margins on all sides.

4.Use a Times or equivalent typeface (e.g. “Times New Roman”) with a point size of 12.

5.Number the pages consecutively beginning with the title page.

6.Do not use hard line breaks after each line, only at the end of paragraphs.

7.Do not use manual hyphenation. If your word processor does not provide automatic hyphenation, leave hyphens out altogether (otherwise they might appear in the middle of lines in the printed version).

8.Include a diskette or CD-ROM with the text file(s) in Microsoft Word 6.0, 95, 97, or 2000 format and the figures in TIF, BMP, or JPG format. For other media or file types, please contact the publishing office. Alternatively, you can send the file to the publishing office by e-mail (address see above). The electronic and printed versions have to be identical.

9.Include an accompanying letter with the signature of the corresponding author and a declaration that he or she is submitting the paper on behalf of all authors and that they have all seen and approved the final version, or, alternatively, with the signatures of all authors stating their approval.

Title page

The title page should include all authors’ full names and academic institutions, the corresponding author’s mail address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail.

Tables should be typed on a separate sheet and consecutively numbered by their appearance in the text.

1.Figures should be printed on a separate sheet or provided as photographic prints or negatives and consecutively numbered by their appearance in the text.

2.They should be submitted in electronic format as well, if possible. Acceptable file types are TIF, BMP, and JPG. The resolution should be as high as possible.

3.Please consider that the size of figures will usually be reduced for printing and ensure that all information will still be visible after reduction.

4.The inclusion of coloured figures is only possible on special request and usually at the expense of the authors.

Legends should be numbered consecutively and printed on a separate page.

1.References in the text should be indicated by numbers in round brackets e.g. (1, 2, 8–9).

2.All references should be listed at the end of the paper in a separate section and numbered in alphabetical order.

3.Do not use line breaks or carriage returns inside a citation.

4.The format to be used is defined as follows:

    • Names and initials of all authors if three or fewer. Otherwise, list only the first three and use et al. Print the name first, then a space, then the initials. Do not use full stops. Separate authors’ names by commas (“,”).
    • Full title, then a colon (“:”).
    • For journals:
      • -Abbreviated journal name (according to Index Medicus, without full stops).

-Volume number, separated by a space.

-The publication year in round brackets (“()”).

-Another space, the starting page, a long dash (“–“), the end page, a full stop.

    • For book chapters:
      • -“In: “ followed by the names and initials of the editors, the word “(eds.)” and a full stop.

        -Book title, full stop.

-Publisher, followed by a comma, the city of publication, the year in round brackets, and a colon (“:”).

-“pp. ”, the starting page, a long dash (“–“), the end page, a full stop.

    • Examples:
      • -Journal citation:
Beitler JJ, Smith RV, Brook A, et al.: Benign parotid hypertrophy in HIV+ patients: limited late failures after external radiation. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 45 (1999) 451–455.

        -Book chapter:
Notter M: Strahlentherapie bei Pseudotumor orbitae. In: Seegenschmiedt MH, Makoski HB (eds.). Radiotherapie von gutartigen Erkrankungen. Diplodocus-Verlag, Altenberge (2000): pp. 123–136.

5.Do not include references to unpublished material (personal communications, unpublished data, material submitted for publication). Papers in press may be cited however.
